John E. Roberts, 74, passed away Friday, August 25, 2017, at Stormont Vail.
John was born August 4, 1943, in Covington, KY, to John Willis and Betty Jane (Glass) Roberts. He graduated from Covington High School. After graduation he joined the US Air Force. His true passion was driving semi-trucks. He drove for several companies and received citations for safe driving. John drove as recently as August 4, 2017. He also worked for General Motors in Norwood, OH, the mining industries in Leadville, CO, Bromley Construction in Atchison, KS, Fleet Service and Equipment Inc., Truck and Fleet Repair, Lutz Construction, and Avon Beauty Center in Topeka, KS. John was a Cubmaster and Scoutmaster for many years in Topeka and Perry, KS. He loved fishing, the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team, and NASCAR driver, Rusty Wallace.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carolyn (Myers) Roberts; three sons, Barry S. Richardson of Topeka, KS, John M. Roberts of Pittsburgh, PA, and William E. (Kelley) Roberts of Kansas City, MO; one daughter, Teresa M. Richardson of Kansas City, KS; one grandson, Wyatt E. Roberts; one brother, Clem (Kathy) Roberts of Ripley, OH; three sisters, Beverly (Ron) Steele of Sparta, KY, Evelyn Bergeron of Newport News, VA, and Wanda Bunch of Warsaw, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and Arthur Roberts; and one sister, Rebecca Roberts.
A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. A private family inurnment will take place at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
