John W. Miles Iii

July 22, 1942 — November 19, 2020

John W. Miles III, 78, Topeka, passed away on November 19, 2020.

John was born July 22, 1942 in Greensburg, PA, the son of John and Jane (Kim) Miles. He grew up in San Diego, California and graduated from Mar Vista High School in 1960. Following high school, he attended Southwestern Junior College for a year.

John served in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Forbs Field from 1962 to 1966. During his time in the Air Force he was ranked as an Airman Second Class (A2C). He was honorably discharged from his service on September 28, 1966.

On April 10, 1966, John married the love of his life, Nellie M. Roller in Carbondale, KS. John and Nellie lived in Lyndon, KS from 1967 until moving to Topeka in 1985.

John worked as an Accounting Clerk for the Atchison, Topeka, Santa Fe Railway for 34 years before retiring in 2004.

Volunteering was a big part of John's life. After retirement John spent many years volunteering at Topeka North Outreach, where he organized TNO Christmas. He also volunteered at Lyman Grade School, where he mentored students. He started BackSnack in the Topeka area and was a member of the Countryside United Methodist Church and American Legion.

John was a member of several bands where he rocked the drums. He started the gospel groups 'Jubilarians', 'Next Generation', 'The Green Ordinance Band', and 'Marge and the Playboys'. He was passionate about music and spent time with his daughters spreading gospel music.

John had a love of baseball, coaching little league teams from the time he joined the Air Force, through retirement. His daughters, grandsons, and many Lyndonites benefited from his love of baseball. He played many years of slow pitch and was an avid jogger. John would often be seen jogging around Lyndon.

John and Nellie enjoyed traveling and especially loved the visits to Padre Island, Alaska, and Branson.

John had many joys in life, bowling, playing drums, and most of all his family. He would do whatever he could to attend things that his daughters and grandchildren were involved in.

John is survived by his loving wife, Nellie Miles; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann (Daniel) Eye of Baldwin City, and Teresa Jane (Dennis) Guilbault of Topeka. His precious grandchildren, Kayla (Craig) Smith, Monett, MO; Chadwick Dean Foust and Nicholas R. Foust, Sherylwood, CO; Allie (Will) Culley, Pomona, KS; Jennifer (Mike) Cross; Kevin Guilbault; Darrin (Christine)Eye; Danielle Eye; and an adopted granddaughter, Julie C. Knolle, Berlin, Germany.
