John E. McConnell, 87, Topeka, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2016.
John was born February 17, 1929 in Quinter, KS, the son of Finley and Myrtle (Howard) McConnell. He graduated from St. Mary's High School and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Astoria during World War II.
He owned and operated McConnell Excavating for over 40 years, retiring in 1998.
He was a member of Operating Engineers, Local #101, since 1949 and Faith Lutheran Church.
John married Berdine Schultz on April 2, 1971. She survives. Other survivors include daughters, Bobbi (Curt) Bohnert, Phoenix, AZ, Sherry (Gary) Braun, Spokane, WA; son, John D. (Carol) McConnell, Seattle, WA; step-children, Gary (Robin) Schultz, Riverton, KS, Mary (Jim) Livergood. Knob Noster, MO, Bill (Mary K.) Schultz, Berryton, KS, Sue McWilliams, Topeka; sister, Irene O'Connor, Orlando, FL; and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence. Inurnment will follow at Rochester Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the chapel one hour prior to the service.
