John M. Mavrovich, "Big John", 73, of Topeka, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, April 14, 2020.
John was born on May 22, 1946, in Pennsylvania, the son of Andrew and Helen (Ondo) Mavrovich. He graduated from Monongahela High School, the class of 1964. He served in the Army National Guard.
On November 7, 1964, John married Anita Herman in Pennsylvania. They were married for 55 years.
John was employed at Good Year as a mechanic, retiring after 30+ years. After retiring he began driving a school bus for Seaman Grade School, Dist. 345; he enjoyed all of the children that rode his bus and liked seeing them grow up through the years.
John was a member of the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, of Topeka.
John loved traveling and always had a story to tell about one of his travels or about his kids that rode the school bus. He loved gardening and started planting milkweed for caterpillars, eventually hatching and tracking monarchs and swallowtails; he loved every step of the process. He was had a membership at the Topeka Civic Theater and enjoyed going with Anita and Jade. John made friends wherever he went and was always willing to help someone out. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, and all around a good guy.
John is survived by his wife, Anita Mavrovich; son, Roy Mavrovich; daughter, Jenny (Spencer) Braun; grandchildren, Jade, Slayten, and Gavin Braun; and sister, Marianne Patz. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Stephen Mavrovich and Andy Mavrovich.
Following John's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date when possible.
