John J. Nicol, 92, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family.
John was born November 18, 1923, in Vassar, KS, to John Henry and Minnie (Smith) Nicol. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1942. After high school he joined the US Navy as a welder. After three years of service he was honorably discharged as a Shipfitter First Class. John married Helen L. Winter on May 31, 1947, in Topeka, KS. After 35 years as a firefighter for the Topeka Fire Department he retired as an Assistant Fire Chief. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, American Legion Post 1, and the Firefighters Union Local #83. John enjoyed camping, bowling, golfing, spending time at the casino, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his five children, Sandra Nicol, Jan Nicol, Rick (Jeanna) Nicol, Dave (Carolyn) Nicol, and Marilyn Nicol, all of Topeka; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; daughter, Judy Patrick; three brothers; and four sisters.
A funeral ceremony will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
