John Edward Diehl
John Edward Diehl, 83, Topeka, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at a Topeka care facility. Mr. Diehl was a self-employed general contractor. He had worked in the Santa Fe Shops from 1946 to 1962. He also farmed near Hoyt. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was born Aug. 10, 1920, in Topeka, the son of John Pete and Loie M. Dachenhausen Diehl. Mr. Diehl was a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. He married Dorothy Myrtle Schafer on Sept. 27, 1941, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, John R. Diehl, Seneca, S.C., and Michael L. Diehl, Tyler, Texas; a brother, Jess H. Diehl, Berryton; a sister, Frances Banks, Tecumseh; five grandchildren, Charles D. Diehl, Brooklyn, N.Y., J. Alan Diehl, Philadelphia, Brandi Meek, Mountain Home, Idaho, Stephanie Miller, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Amy Diehl, Tyler, Texas; and three great-grandchildren. Cremation is planned. Mr. Diehl will lie in state after 3 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Parker -Price Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Burial of cremains will be private.
