Joe Stover

March 9, 1928 — December 13, 2023

Joe Dean Stover age 95, passed away on December 13th, 2023 in Silver Lake, Kansas. He was the youngest son born to Harry and Lillian Christman Stover on March 9th, 1928. He attended West Indianola Elementary School and graduated from Seaman High School in 1946. Joe was a 4-year member of the Seaman High School football team which was undefeated in 1945. He was proud of this record which stands yet today.

After high school he attended Kansas State University. On October 29, 1949 he married his Topeka High sweetheart, Helen Burress. They have celebrated 74 years of marriage.

As a young adult, he farmed and worked with his father in the family's commercial potato operation and row crop productions. The Stover's Capital City Potato Farms employed hundreds of seasonal workers of which Joe was field supervisor and equipment mechanic. Following the 1951 flood he helped clean up the demolished areas of the Seaman School District and NOTO. With the changed landscape and economy after the Topeka flood, Joe became an employee of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 40 years. He started in tire production then upon attending Kaw Area Vo-Tech School he became an industrial mechanic. As a mechanic crew member in 1963, he helped shut down every machine of the Goodyear plant in honor of President John Kennedy's funeral. During his career with Goodyear he, his wife and son established and operated the Stover Farms of Silver Lake.

Family events, supporting education, reading and "getting the job done" were Joe's passions. He enjoyed attending his kids and grandkids school activities along with home ball games and 4-H shows. Joe supported with time and great encouragement his youngest daughter's hobby of quarter horse barrel racing.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Anna Stover, Freda Domme, brothers Phillip Stover, Jimmie Stover, Charlie Stover and Wayne Stover and son-in-law Joe Steele.

Survivors include his wife Helen Stover, daughter Carolyn Steele (Jack), daughter Joleen Steele, son John Stover (Mary) and daughter Jenell Kern (Rick); grandchildren include: Kelly, Kyle, Tyler, Travis, Hayley, Samantha, Kean, Spencer, Heather, Cliff, Garrett and Caleb.
