Joe B. McCarter, 85, Topeka, was promoted to Assistant to the Greatest Carpenter, Jesus Christ on Monday, March 26, 2018 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
Joe was born October 16, 1932 in Shawnee County, Kansas, the son of Fern and Eva (Stone) McCarter.
In 1952, he graduated from Topeka High School. On December 23, 1953 he married Darlene E. Cook. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during the Korean War.
He was the 6th person hired when the DuPont Plant in Tecumseh opened in 1958. He worked there 14 years before opening and operating his own business Transport Refrig & Equip Co. in Topeka for 40 years. He was proud to have had Southwestern Bell Telephone Co & Beatrice Foods Dairy as two of his major customers. He took his work very serious and would work round the clock if necessary to have a piece of equipment ready for a customer the next day.
After his retirement, he took great interest in wood working and made many items for family and friends.
Joe attended Central Park Christian Church. He was also a member of Golden Rule Lodge No. 90 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, Arab Shrine, V.F.W. and American Legion.
Joe was especially proud of his family. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 64 years, Darlene; two daughters, Susan Cochran, Topeka and Becky Centlivre, Olathe; four grandchildren, Kyle (Kendra) Cochran, Brock (Jennifer) Centlivre, Heather (Jon) Smith and Stephanie (Derek) Ferrell; six great-grandchildren, Bryce, Brayden & Brinley Cochran; Harper & Hudson Centlivre; Grayson Ferrell and baby girl Emerson Smith on the way; one sister, Laura Simpson, El Dorado and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Jeanne Connole, Virginia LaCrune and Audre Rose.
A celebration of Joe's life will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Central Park Christian Church. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital Travel Fund c/o Arab Temple, 1305 S.
