JoAnn (Long, Benedict, Phillips) Tjelmeland, 83, Topeka, died on January 15, 2020 at Midland Hospice House.
She was born February 3, 1936, the daughter of Frances Koch and Arthur McCammon, in Kansas City, MO and named Dana Gail Koch. She was adopted September 10, 1936 by Charles and Mary Redemske and named Josephine Ann. She was raised on their farm South of Dover. JoAnn graduated from Dover High School and attended Washburn University, Stormont Vail School of Nursing, College of Emporia and Newman Hospital School of Nursing in Emporia. After becoming a registered nurse, she was employed by Stormont Vail Hospital, Kansas Neurological Institute, Dr. Choy as his surgical scrub nurse and Dr. Leslie Saylor as his surgical office nurse.
JoAnn was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, American Adoption Congress, Adoption Concerns Triangle, the American Nurses Association and Kansas State Nurses Association. JoAnn received the Women of Distinction Award in 1997.
JoAnn enjoyed music of all kinds, going to garage sales, shopping, quilting and quilting restoration.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Truman Long (July 29, 1977), Robert Benedict (December 28, 2002), Arthur Phillips (March 29, 2005), and Marion Tjelmeland (November 18, 2014).
She leaves a daughter, Teresa (Gary) Wenger, of Topeka; sons, Andy (Jean) Baer of Ottawa, Marty Long of Topeka, and Charles (Terri) Long of Auburn; step-daughter, Bonnie (Gary) Leeth of Topeka; three step-sons, Marty Benedict, Kirk (Kim) Tjelmeland, both of Topeka, and Kyle (Janet) Tjelmeland of Pagosa Springs, CO.; sister-in-law, Ramona (Jodel) Jerred of Monument, CO.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Betty Sorenson; daughter-in-law, Sandy Delfelder Long; and grandson, Travis Long.
Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Parker-Price Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2020 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
