Joan Kathryn McConnell, 80, of Topeka, died Sunday, October 9, 2005 at Alterra Claire Bridge Cottage. She was born December 19, 1924 in Glen Elder, Kansas the daughter of John Moffet and Neva Leona Cooper Dickinson.
Joan graduated from Glen Elder High School and Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1943. She worked as a secretary at Beech Aircraft in Wichita and Kansas State University. She came to Topeka in 1946 and worked at the State Budget office. She worked as a secretary in the loan department for Merchants Bank and Commerce Bank. She and Bruce owned and operated McConnell's Service Station in Topeka from 1972 until 1992.
She was a member of Seaman Congregational United Church of Christ since 1956 where she taught Sunday school and was on the Building Committee for the Education Unit. She was a den mother for six years in the Cub Scouts pack #17. Joan was a 50 year member of Naomi chapter #28 Order of Eastern Star.
Joan was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Bruce McConnell in 2000 and a brother Max Dickinson in 1975.
She married Bruce M. McConnell, March 1, 1947 in Topeka, Kansas. He survives.
Other survivors include a son Richard Lee McConnell, Topeka; a sister, Margaret Ann Pruitt, Bentonville, ARK; and a granddaughter Kristine McConnell, Topeka.
A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 13, 2005 at Seaman Congregational United Church of Christ. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. McConnell will lie in state after 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in North Topeka where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
