Jim R. Sturgeon

Jimmy (Jim) R. Sturgeon, 79, of Topeka passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023.  He was born January 9, 1944 at Enid, Oklahoma the son of Curtis and Evelyn Sturgeon.    He lived at Meriden while growing up and graduated from Meriden High School in 1962 and Brown Mackey College in 1985.   He served in the United States Navy.  He returned to Topeka and went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad.

While working for the railroad, he met and married Victoria.  They were married on March 1, 1970 at Second Presbyterian Church in Topeka.

He later worked for Alfred Lee, Goodyear and then at the VA Hospital.  At the VA Hospital he began his career as a carpenter, later becoming a mason.  He worked at the VA for over 20 years before retiring in 2006.

He was a member of Post #400 of the American Legion, NRA, Good Sam Camping Club, Meriden United Methodist Church, and the Newmar Country Club Camping Club.   He enjoyed being outdoors, shooting, hunting, fishing and coaching his kids.  He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandkids.

Jim is survived by his wife, Vickie Sturgeon of Topeka; his daughter, Jerra Sturgeon of Topeka, Matt Sturgeon (Sherri) of Meriden; sister, Donna Lee Martin (Bob) of Topeka; grandchildren, Blake (Amber) Bowden, Lindsey (Jacob) Box, Robert Folger, Haley, Tyler, Brinnly and Zayne; great grandchildren, Mason, Colton, Jaxyn, Paxtyn and Layna.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lynda Sturgeon, who passed away in 1967 and his siblings, Evelyn (LaVonne) Anspaugh, Richard Sturgeon, Curtis Sturgeon and Carol Dean Brown.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, November 14, 2023 from 6-7 pm at Davidson Funeral Home.   Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 15th at the Meriden United Methodist Church.   Interment and military honors will be conducted in Rochester Cemetery, Topeka.   Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care
