Jewel Spiker
Jewel Spiker, 96, Topeka, KS, died Thursday, April 23, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka. She was born September 9, 1918, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the daughter of Robert Levi and Lilly M. (Whiteside) Proudfit.
She was reared at Powhattan where she graduated from Powhattan High School. She attended Fort Hays State Teachers College.
Jewel married Wilbur Sumner Spiker in May 11, 1940. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Diane Ent, on May 9, 2009; and a grandson, Michael Allen Ent, on August 7, 2007. She was preceded in death by four siblings, Bill Proudfit, Ernie Proudfit, Louise Bickett, and Lilah Strube.
Jewel and Wilbur farmed and operated a Grade A Dairy in the Granada Community of Nemaha County. After leaving the farm and dairy operation they moved to Florida. She lived at Rossville before moving to Topeka. She worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company's Topeka Plant before retiring. She received the National Goodyear Spirit Award. She was a volunteer for Muscular Sclerosis for many years.
She was a long-time member of First Southern Baptist Church where she was active in the choir, Women's Missionary Union, and Joy In The Morning.
One of Jewel's greatest joys was winning – Bingo, Bunco, and Rummi Cube.
Surviving are a daughter: Judy K. Seitz of Topeka; a son: Lonnie W. Spiker (Jan) of Topeka; grandchildren: Julie Whitney (Kyle Hammersmith) of Lynchburg, Virginia, Wayne Whitney (Monique) of Phoenix, AZ, Joyce Dougherty (Andy) of North Aurora, Illinois, Jacquie Lightcap (Torey) of Sioux City, Iowa, Scott Spiker (June) of Silver Lake, Kansas, Barbara Roth of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Mark Ent of Topeka; great-grandchildren: Kylie Hammersmith, Zack Hammersmith, Griffin Hammersmith, Marabeth Hammersmith, Sam Hammersmith, Eric Uher, Katherine Uher, Brianne Dougherty, Danielle Dougherty, Gabriel Lightcap, Annie Lightcap, Codi Spiker, Chelsey Boxberger, Corey Spiker, and Allen Michael Ent; and one great-great-grandson: Michael Allen Ent.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at First Southern Baptist Church, 1912 SW Gage, Topeka. Private entombment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery's Mausoleum, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to service time.
