Adeline "Jean" Penry, 97, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2023.
She was born April 1, 1926, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Kasselhout) Hockett.
Jean married John W. Penry on February 16, 1946 in Topeka, KS. He preceded her in death on March 5, 2013.
Jean had the best laugh. She adored her children and grandchildren. She treasured her time spent with them.
She enjoyed going to the casino with her sisters and playing the penny slots.
After retirement, her and her husband bought a farm. The farm is where a lot of memories with the family took place. Together they shared their love for the garden. Jean would can anything and everything that John grew in the garden. She canned clear up into her 90s.
Survivors include her children, James Penry and Jan Bryan; grandchildren, Jason (Brandi) Harris, Chad (Mallory) Penry, Destiny (Jon) Thompson, Jamie (Rebecca) Penry, and Chelsea Meyer; eight great-grandchildren and her sisters, Nancy (Larry) Redd and Dona (Virgil) Waldo and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Bessie; husband, John W. Penry; sisters, Becky Hodges, Maxine Bush, Alyce Frost, Marjorie Hummer, Grace Hockett, and her brother, Pat Hockett.
A Funeral Ceremony will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the Parker-Price Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 245 N.W. Independence Avenue, Topeka. The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Prairie Home Cemetery in Topeka.
The family would like to specially thank Homestead and their staff for their continued help throughout Jean's time there. Interim Hospice and their nurse Sarah provided exceptional care to Jean as well.
