OBITUARY: Jane Ann Hamilton Shy
Jane Ann Hamilton Shy, 73, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2011.
She was born June 13, 1938 in Waterville, KS, the daughter of Leamon Isaac and Velma Christina (Scheller) Hamilton. She graduated from Marysville High School, Marysville, KS in 1956. Jane Shy, RN graduated from Stormont Vail School of Nursing in 1959 and maintained her nursing license throughout her lifetime. Jane spent much of her career as a surgical nurse at Santa Fe Memorial Hospital, Topeka, KS. She also held employment as a nurse in the office of Topeka opthamalogist, Dr. Ashley, Portamedic visiting nurse for Victory Life Insurance Company, and Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant nurse. She was an active member of the Stormont Vail Nurses Alumni Association and a volunteer for Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center and the Red Cross.
Jane married Jim Asbury and later divorced. He preceeded her in death. Jane married Raymond "Ray" Shy on October 23, 1968. He preceded her in death on October 11, 2003. Survivors include four step-daughters, Lou Ann Shy Montague, Columbia, MO; Carolyn (Ed) Church, Lawrence, KS; Jeannie (Dennis) Wiseman, Topeka, KS; Nancy (Matthew) Boulton, Rich Hill, MO; and cousins, Phyllis Burkhart, Lawrence, KS; Joyce Scheller Burns, Colorado Springs, CO; Terry Scheller Ferrell, Murrieta, CA; Evelyn Hamilton, Marysville, KS; Lowell Hamilton, Marysville, KS. Other survivors include eight grandchildren Kellee Fitzgerald, Jamee Sloan, Steve & Cory Church, Garrett, Angela & Blake Wiseman, and Chase Winters; six great-grandchildren, Luke & Lanee Fitzgerald, Kaleb Sloan, Malcom & Sophie Church, and Ava Ray Wiseman. Jane enjoyed collecting recipes and pottery, was an excellent seamstress, couldn't pass a garage sale and amused everyone with the bargain deals she could find at a flea market. Most of all she enjoyed her cat Sam, family and friends. She and her late husband, Ray were members of the Family Motor Coach Association and travelled extensively in their motor home. They owned vacation homes in Colorado and Texas and eventually spent most of the year in Harlingen, TX.
Cremation is planned. A memorial ceremony will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, in North Topeka at 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. Inurnment will follow at Rochester Cemetery, Topeka.
