James Oscar Bell, 90, Topeka, died Sat., Oct. 20, 2012, at Midland Hospice House. He was born at Lyndon, on Jan. 14, 1922, the son of Henry C. and Eva H. (Jessop) Bell.
He graduated from Lyndon High School and started college at East Texas State which was interrupted by his U.S. Navy service in WW II. He graduated from the College of Emporia and received an M.A. from the Univ. of Kansas. Coach Bell taught and coached at Emporia Junior High, Holliday Junior High, Jardine Junior High, and retired from Highland Park High School. Jim continued to referee until the age of 90, and for 25 years served as the area supervisor for the K.S.H.S.A.A. Jim was inducted into the Highland Park Wall of Fame in 2002, and into the Topeka Officials Assoc. Hall of Fame in 2006.
He was a member and Elder of the Oakland Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Philip Billard Post # 1650 of the V.F.W.; Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion; and Moose Lodge # 555.
Jim was married to Hazel Mae Baldridge on Dec. 25, 1949, in Topeka. She preceded him in death on Dec. 6, 1999. Surviving are children: Kathy Logan (Terry Widner) of Topeka, Karla Engbrecht (Dennis) of Bremen, IN, and Kurt Bell (Robin) of Topeka; sisters: Ruth Barnhart of Osage City and Doris Siegel of Irwin, PA; grandchildren: Johnny Logan (Shelley) of Gunnison, CO, Nathan Engbrecht of Terre Haute, IN, Aaron Engbrecht of Bremen, IN, Rachel Phipps (Michael) of Mishawaka, IN, and Johnny Bell (Stacey) of Topeka; and great-grandchildren: John Logan (Natasha) of Gunnison, CO, Sierra Logan of Gunnison, CO, Brady Bell of Topeka, and Cambrie Bell of Topeka.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Fri., Oct. 26, 2012, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. Military Honors will be conducted at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th, Topeka. Jim will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Thurs., at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.
