James Kendall Smith
James Kendall Smith, 96, Topeka, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka. He was born October 1, 1918, at Holton, Kansas, the son of James Andrew Jackson Smith and Nora (Kelsey) Smith.
Jim graduated from Holton High School and Topeka Business College. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired as a station superintendent at Hillcrest Post Office.
He was married to Elva "Ruth" Hayden on July 9, 1939, at Holton. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2013.
Surviving are a daughter: Judy Murray of Topeka; a son and daughter-in-law: Gary and Sue Smith of Smithville, TX; nine grandchildren: Kimberly Bruton (Bob), Corey Smith (Jeanna), Kelly Wiley (Lane), Carrie van der Wal (Hans), Stacy Green (Greg), Tracey Caulk (Lance), Amy Labby (Scott), Melissa Kern (Rory), and Scott Smith; fourteen great-grandchildren: Brett James (Shelby) Brian James, Breeanna Davenport (Mark), Brooks Smith, Jared Wiley, Odin van der Wal, Torin van der Wal, Janie Sonnichsen, Jessica Caulk, Shelby Caulk, Keaton Labby, Ryan Labby, Wyatt Hillyer, and Luke Hillyer; and three great-great-grandchildren: Mara Grau-James, Lorelai Grau-James, and Alex Davenport.
Funeral services will be at 10: 00 AM, Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. Military honors will be conducted at Holton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel.
