James A. Ryan
James A. Ryan, 89, Topeka, died Monday, February 10, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka. He was born February 26, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of James and Myrtle (Darrow) Ryan.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy for five years.
James started with the Kansas Air National Guard in Hutchinson, and then transferred to Topeka. He retired from the Kansas Air National Guard in February, 1984, as Chief Master Sergeant of the 190th Maintenance Squadron. James was a member of Mater Dei Campus, Assumption Campus. He was an avid golfer and bowler.
On October 22, 2010, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Myra, and on August 29, 1989, a son, Michael.
James is survived by his children: Dale Switzky (Joyce) of Sun Lakes, Arizona, Dennis Switzky (Kathy) of Topeka, Suzann Whitt (Glenn) of Topeka, Mary Rhoades (Larry) of Denver, Colorado, Jim Ryan of Topeka, and John Ryan of Denver, Colorado; nine grandchildren: Danette Tafoya, Deanna Fergerson, Derek Switzky, Drew Switzky, Darchelle Martin, Christy Ahl, Calie Taylor, Brett Rhoades, and Jeremy Ryan; and numerous great-grandchildren.
The Kansas Air National Guard will conduct military honors at 1:00 PM, Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. James will lie in state from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka, Kansas.
