OBITUARY: Jack Burton Gies, Sr.
Jack Burton Gies, Sr., 80, Tecumseh, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 28, 2006, at Midland Hospice House. He was born Feb. 7, 1926, at Topeka, the son of Jacob John and Lydia (Kaufman) Gies.
Jack attended Tecumseh Grade School, Highland Park High School, and received a Bachelor's Degree from Washburn University. He received his Master's Degree from the University of Kansas.
Jack was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and was retired from the Army. He started his teaching career at Perry High School where he also coached girls' basketball. For U.S.D. 501 he taught at Capper, Roosevelt, and Eisenhower; served as assistant principal at Eisenhower; and was principal at Hudson and Quinton Heights. He retired in 1988 with 39 years as an educator.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church; Orient Lodge # 51, A.F. & A.M.; Fort Riley Retirement Council; Luther Board (Past President); NEA-T (life member); Highland Park Alumni Assoc.; PDK (life member and Past President); Highland Park High School Hall of Fame; and Jayhawk Area Council Executive Board, B.S.A. (Silver Beaver Award). He was an Order of the Arrow advisor and served as a camp inspector for 21 years.
Jack married Bette Jane (Burrell) on Aug. 30, 1947, at Assumption Church, Topeka. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Jack B. Gies, Jr. (Claudia) and Martin L. "Marty" Gies (Pamela) all of Tecumseh; 2 grandchildren: Michele L. Gies and Jacob T. Gies both of Tecumseh; a brother: Robert L. Gies of Eagan, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Slankard, and a brother, William E. Gies.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at First Lutheran Church, 1234 S.W. Fairlawn. A Fort Riley U.S. Army Detail will conduct military honors at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Jack will lie in state after 2:00 p.m., Thursday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
