J. Kurtiss Carlson
J. Kurtiss Carlson, 69, Topeka, Kansas, died Wednesday, April 29, 2015, of lymphoma at Saint Francis Hospital, Topeka. He was born October 11, 1945, at Lindsborg, Kansas, the son of John "Renus" and Ruby Agnes (Palmquist) Carlson.
Kurtiss graduated from Marquette High School and Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, and attended Washburn University. He served in the U.S. Army in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany. He was employed by the Kansas Department of Insurance and Kansas Fire and Casualty; and retired from the Kansas Department of Labor, Workers Compensation Division. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a former member of Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion.
Kurtiss was married to Sue Drexl on November 6, 2004, in Topeka.
Surviving are: his wife Sue Carlson of the home; ten children: Lori Brewster (Kyle) of Hoyt, KS, Michael Carlson (Heather) of Holton, KS, Jered Carlson (Lacy) of Topeka, KS, Brett Thelin (Alicia) of Herriman, UT, Jody Hansen (Erik) of Morgan Hill, CA, Todd Thelin (Amelia) of West Valley, UT, Christopher Robin "C.R." Thelin (MarKay) of Enterprise, UT, Catie Thelin of Topeka, Jenny Kynaston (Carl) of Lehi, UT, and Tim Thelin (Allison) of San Jose, CA; twenty-five grandchildren: Kayla Felix (Ryan), Leigha Brewster, Keaton Brewster, Levi Brewster, Haydee Carlson, Ashlyn Carlson, Jayana Carlson, Theron Carlson, Xander Carlson, Skylar Carlson, Meagan Thelin, Madeline Thelin, Alexander Thelin, Sam Hansen, Sophie Hansen, Peter Hansen, Karrsten Hansen, Chloe Hansen, Oliver Thelin, Kamry Thelin, Dawson Thelin, Maggie Kynaston, Tilley Kynaston, and Adelaide Thelin; and two great-grandsons: Reagan Felix and Benjamin Felix. He is also survived by his first wife, Lynda (Graham) Carlson; his mother-in-law, Laura Drexl; his many adored nieces and nephews; and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Daryl R. Carlson.
Kurtiss had a love of woodworking, but his skills were many and he was a true handy-man. He was a farmer at heart, and he enjoyed NASCAR. He loved serving others and is remembered for always being willing to help.
Kurtiss will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Sunday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, Sunday.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 4, 2015, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2401 SW Kingsrow Road, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 9:45 AM at the church. Interment will be in Half-Day Cemetery, Elmont (North Topeka).
