Irena M. Lucas

Irena M. Lucas, age 99, of Berryton, KS, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2020 at her home in Berryton, KS.  Irena was born September 30, 1920 in Hutchinson, KS the daughter of Noah and May (Marshall) King.  She grew up in Hutchinson, graduating from Hutchinson High School and later from Hutchinson Junior College where she earned her teaching certificate.  She would teach in District 18 at a one room school house in the Hutchinson area.  She married Francis S. Lucas Jr. May 17, 1942 in Hutchinson.  He would preceded her in death November 28, 1991.  Upon moving to Topeka, Irena would work at Pelletier’s Department Store in the mid 1950’s and Meals on Wheels from 1977 – 2010.  She was a seamstress most of her life.  Irena was a long time member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church.  She attended Southwest Topeka Bible Church and spent the last year of her life attending Grace Bible Church, all in Topeka.  She served on the board of directors and was a leader of Camp Fire Girls for many years.  She also served as a Sparks leader for AWANA.  Irena was preceded in death by a grandson, Terry Bauer and a daughter-in-law, Isabel Lucas.  She is survived by two sons, Steve (Anna Mae) Lucas of Topeka and Mark Lucas of Georgetown, TX; three daughters, Judy (George) Bauer of Kidder, MO, Mary Lucas of Topeka and Martha (Jim) Springer of Berryton, KS; 15 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 25, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home.  She will lie in state Wednesday from noon – 5:00 p.m. and visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home.  Interment will be at the West Lawn Memorial Gardens.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission and sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home.  We are asking everyone to wear a mask and practice proper social distancing.
