Hugh Hannagan, 81, Carbondale, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016.
He was born June 13, 1935 in Manhattan, the son of William S. and Elsie M. (Whitmer) Hannagan.
He spent his early years on a farm west of Manhattan and moved with his folks to Johnson County where he attended a one room grade school. He graduated from Stanley High School and continued his education at Wichita University and Baker University where he played basketball and baseball.
Hugh left home at the age of 15 and worked on a cattle ranch helping show Angus Cattle. He loved to tell about his two trips to the west coast on an open boxcar filled with cattle.
His business career started in 1961 and was a loan officer for 46 years. Employment was with Interstate Securities, Commerce Bank & Trust and Columbian Bank. He finished his career as Homebuyer Counselor for HCCI.
He was past president of the Stanley Grange; Valley Jaycees, Valley Station, KY; Capefear Jaycees, Fayetteville, NC; Topeka Lenders Exchange; and Eskridge Chamber of Commerce. He was Chairman of the Johnson County Committee to bring pro football to Kansas City from Dallas. He was one of the original season ticket holders presented to him by the K.C. Chiefs for his efforts.
Hugh coached little league baseball and football in Johnson County, Suburban League, SCABA and American Legion.
Hugh married Verna Dedrick. They later divorced. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents; brother; and son-in-law. Hugh is survived by his wife, Sharon Kaye; daughters, Shirla Bowers, Erin (Darrell) Rush; son, Shawn (Kathy) Hannagan; grandchildren, Hannah and Conner Rush; and sister, Marge (Sid) Reynolds. Step-children and step-grandchildren also survive.
Hugh donated his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Visitation will be from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence.
Hugh was very proud of his Irish heritage and loved telling and listening to Irish Jokes. Be wearing the green and remember to begin every day with a smile.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Maisie Devore Swimming Pool Fund in Eskridge.
