OBITUARY: Hubert D. Townsend
Hubert D. "Hugo" Townsend, 86, went to be with the Lord, Sat., Sept. 13, 2008, at his home. He was born Aug. 31, 1922, on a farm East of Billard Airport in the Community of Oakland, the son of Cecil and Dolin Townsend. He lived in Oakland his entire life.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army. Hubert and Betty Kitch were married April 13, 1947 in Rozel, Ks. He started his career in the glass business in 1947 with Acme Harding Glass, he worked for PPG Industries until 1979, when he retired as the Topeka Branch Manager. He and his sons established Townsend Glass and Mirror in 1979.
A date he was very proud of and felt was the turning point in his life was Jan. 29, 1956 when he and Betty dedicated their life and their family to the Lord. Hubert became a Disciples of Christ minister in 1988. He and Betty were very involved in ministering to the sick and dying.
The last ten years he has been a member of Lakeview Church of the Nazarene where he was a Local Minister, continuing his visitation ministry. Hubert was a member of Gideons International, Scottish Rite, Topeka Lodge #17, AF & AM, and the American Legion Capitol Post No. 1.
Surviving are his wife, Betty, children and their spouses, Steve and Shelly Townsend, Summerville, S.C., Jerry and Connie Townsend, Connie and Mell Frazier, and Tim and Donna Townsend, all of Topeka; sisters, Faye Kelsey, Edmond, OK, and Greta Kelsey, Topeka; 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bill Townsend.
Hubert was very dedicated to his family and his Church. His love and his prayers will always be cherished. He has attained The Promise of Eternal Life that was given to him in 1956 when he accepted the Lord into his life, a life well lived.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Thurs., Sept. 18, 2008, at Lakeview Church of the Nazarene. Military honors will be conducted at Mount Hope Cemetery. Hubert will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Wed., at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
