Herbert Richard Bernhardt, 91, of Topeka, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009.
He was born Nov. 12, 1917 in Marion, KS, the son of Henry and Katherine Bernhardt.He served in France with the United States Army during WW II.
Mr. Bernhardt owned and operated the Amoco Service Station at 29th and Topeka Blvd. for 28 years. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge No. 555, American Legion Post No. 1, Phillip Billard Post No. 1650 of the V.F.W., the Topeka Scottish Rite and Albert Neese Lodge No. 248.
Herbert married Margaret "Barb" Fuller on July 2, 1941. She preceded him in death on April 23, 1995. Survivors include his son, Bradley Bernhardt (Sherry) of Lawrence, KS; his daughter, Connie Carson (Ronald) of Queen Creek, AZ; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 6, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Mr. Bernhardt will lie instate after 3 p.m., Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Phillip Billard Post No. 1650 of the V.F.W., 3110 SW Huntoon, Topeka, KS 66604.
