OBITUARY: Herbert Maurice Whitehead
Herbert Maurice Whitehead, 92, Topeka, died Wed., Feb. 18, 2009, at Aldersgate Village. He was born Oct. 24, 1916, at Silver Lake, the son of Lester Louis and Helen "Louise" (Root) Whitehead.
Herb was a farmer and a maintenance engineer at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a member the Silver Lake United Methodist Church; Lake Lodge # 50, AF & AM; Loyal Chapter # 176, OES; Arab Shrine Temple; West Topeka Kiwanis Club; Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Silver Lake Senior Citizens, Inc; The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association; and 40 et 8. He was a volunteer at the Stormont-Vail Emergency Room and the Kansas State Historical Museum. Herb was a former member of the Silver Lake School Board and Alumni Association.
He was married to Mertie Pauline Bramlett on March 10, 1946, at Silver Lake. She preceded him in death on Nov. 18, 1983. Herb married Sarah Frances Warfel Belcher on Dec. 29, 1984, in Topeka. She survives.
Also surviving are 4 daughters: Kathy Breer (Larry) of Salina, Barbara Crump (Mike) of Silver Lake, Phyllis Dolechek (Dennis) of Silver Lake, and Mahala Silversmith (Gary) of Meriden; 4 sons: Bob Whitehead (Sharyl) of Topeka, Jim Whitehead (Barb) of Topeka, Ronald G. Belcher (Joan) of Montgomery, AL, and Noel A. Belcher (Janice) of Bowdle, SD; a sister: 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Sat., Feb. 21, 2009, at the Silver Lake United Methodist Church. Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion will conduct Military Honors and Lake Lodge # 50, AF & AM will conduct Masonic Services at Silver Lake Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sat., Feb. 21, 2009, at Aldersgate Village's Wesley Hall. Herb will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Fri., at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka., where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
