Henry "Red" Howland, Jr., 77, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2009 at his home.
He was born November 25, 1931 in Sparks, KS, the son of Henry and Edna Earl (Huber) Howland, Sr. He was a graduate of Seaman High School, Topeka. He served in the United States Marines during the Korean War.
Mr. Howland was employed by Seymore Foods, and the U.S. Postal Service in Topeka. He later owned and operated A-1 Septic Tank Cleaning in Topeka from 1972 until his retirement in 2007. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 400 of North Topeka, Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of V.F.W. of Topeka, and Moose Lodge No. 555.
Henry married Wanda L. Baldwin on December 11, 1954 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on June 13, 2009. Survivors include three children, Ricky L. Howland of Alma, KS, Marcia L. Sharry (Jim) of Moore, OK and Tamara L. Russell (Brian) of Topeka; his sister, Fern Shaw of Topeka; two grandsons, Robert and Michael Sharry; step-grandson, Lukas Russell; and two great-granddaughters, Kyla and Lauren Sharry.
Mr. Howland was an avid fan of University of Kansas, NASCAR and NHRA.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Interment with military honors conduted by Post No. 400 American Legion, will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery, Topeka. Mr. Howland will lie in state after 3 p.m., Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post No. 400.
