Helen Peare
Helen R. Peare, 84, Topeka, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Peare taught school in southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri prior to World War II and served in the Navy as a yeoman clerk during World War II. She later taught journalism and English in the Seaman School District. She retired from the Southwestern Bell companies at age 75.
She was born July 21, 1918, in Pittsburg, the daughter of Dr. Howard and Nellie Pearl Burkholder Marchbanks. She was raised in Pittsburg and was qualified to teach music at Pittsburg State University. She earned a master's degree at Northwestern University. She had lived in Topeka for the past 45 years.
Mrs. Peare was a member of Grace Cathedral Church in Topeka, where she sang in the choir until earlier this year.
She married Robert John Peare in 1953. He died in 1995.
Survivors include two daughters, Bethany "Betsy" Peare McGuire and Nancy Peare Avis, both of Topeka; a son, Dennis "Rusty" Peare, Indianapolis; and five grandchildren.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Grace Cathedral.
