Helen Garretson, passed away September 9, 2023.
Helen was born September 28, 1923 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to Ralph and Florence Miller.
After graduating from Dale High School, she pursued her dream of being an R.N., graduating from Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, School of Nursing in Johnstown.
Helen did community home health nursing until she married Dave Garretson in 1946, after he recovered from being wounded in World War II. They moved to Topeka, Kansas were Dave's brother Jim had a job for him. Helen worked at Christ Hospital where she met another R.N. named Opal and a lifelong friendship began with Ernie and Opal Redwine.
She put her nursing career on hold when she and Dave began raising a family. Helen devoted her life to Dave and their four children, taking an active role in school, church, scouting, and neighborhood activities. We also made many fun memories with extended family in Topeka and Pennsylvania.
When the kids were grown, Helen returned to nursing, working on the orthopedic unit at Stormont Vail for 12 1/2 years before retiring. By then, there were more grandchildren to light up her life and shower with love and fun times. Immediate and extended family and friends were a lifelong priority and joy that she never took for granted. Helen and Dave joined West Side Christian Church in 1947 where their faith was nurtured and where they treasured wonderful fellowships, especially with her friends in the Upper Room SS class. Helen taught SS and VBS, and was active in CWF, visiting shut-ins, and committee work. Her volunteer work with individuals at the VA hospital was also very rewarding.
Her hobbies included, sewing, music, bowling, boating, fishing, taking pictures, and traveling. After Dave passed away in 1985, Helen managed his business rental property until the business was sold in 2001.
Also preceding her in death was her son, Brian, daughter, Gayle, granddaughter, Nicole Holm, brother, Robert Miller, and both of her parents.
Helen is survived by her children, Marti (Dennis) Bass, Phil (Lynna), Garretson, 7 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She also felt blessed with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who are all dear to her.
Memorial contributions can be made to Westside Christian church, or the Topeka Rescue Mission in her name.
The family of Helen would like to extend their deepest appreciation to her caregivers at Lexington Park and Gentiva Hospice.
