Helen E. Underwood, 94, Topeka, died Friday, December 27, 2013, at her home. She was born December 8, 1919, in Atchison, the daughter of Marvin F. and Ruby (Vandiver) Martin. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1937.
She retired from Colmery-O'Neil V.A.M.C.
Helen was married to Morris "Hunk" Underwood on September 14, 1941, in Kansas City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August 5, 2012. They were married almost 71 years.
Surviving are a son: Roger K. (Nina) Underwood of Topeka; a daughter: Gaylene (Wayne) Vyrostek of Fayetteville, Arkansas; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sisters: Jessie Robbins and Nona Pavlicic.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at Pleasant View Cemetery, Agricola, Kansas. Helen will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Monday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 2231 SW Wanamaker, # 202, Topeka, KS 66614-4275.
