OBITUARY: Harlen E. Preston



Harlen Elbert Preston, 81, Topeka, died Mon., Oct. 29, 2007, at Stormont-Vail Hospital. He was born Sept. 23, 1926, at Barnes, the son of Charles and Pearl (Livergood) Preston.

Harlen graduated from Barnes High School and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He farmed in the Barnes-Waterville area before moving to Topeka where he worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 30 years before retiring.

He was married to Ellen Adelene Hartigan on June 11, 1948, at Kansas City. She preceded him in death on March 26, 2001.

Harlen is survived by 2 daughters and sons-in-law: Patty and Keith L. Bricker and Lisa and Michael A. Smith, all of Topeka; a brother: Kenneth Preston of San Diego, CA; a sister: Joyce Witmer of Topeka; and 4 granddaughters: Jessica Smith, Heather Bricker, Sarah Smith, and Courtney Bricker.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Thurs., Nov. 1, 2007, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence. Interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Harlen will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Wednesday, at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
