Gwendolyn Smith, 88, Topeka, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2006 at McCrite Plaza.

Mrs. Smith was born October 31, 1917 in Webb City, Missouri, the daughter of Jess and Ruby Wiley Atkinson.

Mrs. Smith graduated from Ft. Scott High School. Following her graduation, she moved to Shawnee, Kansas. She had also lived in Edson, Castleton, Vilas, Bogue, Dorrance, Hill City, and Alma prior to moving to Topeka in 1985.

She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church and was also a member of a Camping Group.

Her life was devoted to being a wife, mother and homemaker.

Gwendolyn married Cecil L. Smith on August 28, 1938 at Kansas City, Missouri. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters; Meredith LaShell and husband, Gary, Topeka, and Elaine Brown and husband, Jack, Liberty, Missouri; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers; Alfred and Willard Atkinson.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at St. David's Episcopal Church. Mrs. Smith will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Parker Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence after 2:00 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to St. David's Episcopal Church Capital Building Fund, 3916 SW 17th, Topeka, Kansas 66604.
