Gordon T. Ensley, 92, Topeka, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2012.
Gordon was born October 6, 1919 in Irving, Kansas, the son of Samuel J. and Elizabeth (Digman) Ensley and was raised in the Bigelow, Kansas area. Six brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. His dad was a farmer, and
Gordon worked for farmers until 1947 when he went to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company until retiring in 1981.
Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Pauley of Beattie, Kansas whom he married 1938. They later moved to the Dover, Kansas community and then to North Topeka in 1969. In 2001, they moved to the Topeka Presbyterian Manor. They had four sons, Dennis (Betty) of Topeka, Robert (Virginia) of Topeka, John (Ruth) of Hoyt, and Ted (Pamela) of Topeka; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Gordon's home in North Topeka was situated on 1.5 acres of ground, which Gordon loved to garden. His greatest pride was his half-acre of strawberries. Gordon and Wilma entered their yard and gardens in the annual Topeka Lawn and Garden Contest, and for their efforts they won several honors. Gordon was active in the Dover community, and, after moving to North Topeka, he and Wilma volunteered at the Topeka Rescue Mission.
In recent years Gordon and his sons had breakfast together every Monday at IHOP and breakfast every Friday at Denny's with the First Baptist Church group known as the R.O.M.E.O.S. (Retired Old Men Eating Out). Gordon was a former member of the Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church and a current member of the First Baptist Church and the Berean Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the United Rubber Workers Union Local #307, and Goodyear Retirees Club.
A funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Interment will follow at the Half-day Cemetery, Elmont, Kansas. Gordon will lie in state after 3 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 3033 Southwest MacVicar Ave., Topeka, KS 66611 or to the Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N.
