Gladys E. Holmes

Gladys E. Holmes, 100, of Topeka, died Sunday, January 9, 2011 at home.

She was born November 28, 1910 to William and Mary (Suddarth) Buckman on a farm southwest of Topeka. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1928.

Gladys married Sam Holmes on November 28, 1931 in Rossville, KS. He preceded her in death in 1993. Her four siblings also preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Bob (Lois) Holmes; a daughter, Mary Lou Holmes, both of Topeka; three granddaughters, Denise (Ed) Payne, Debra Dreher, both in Knoxville, TN, and Sheri (Jim) Higdon, Dalton, GA; a grandson, Dennis Holmes, Topeka; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters and many who called her "Grandma".

The family would like to thank Grace Hospice for all the help they provided to Gladys and her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th, Suite #100, Topeka, KS 66614 or to Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Rd., Topeka, KS 66617.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Interment will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery, Topeka. Mrs. Holmes will lie in state from 3-8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
