Dr. Bill Nice

Dr. Gerald William "Bill" Nice, 80, Topeka, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at a Topeka care facility.
Dr. Nice had a private practice in internal medicine and diseases of the chest in Topeka from 1954 to 1988. He did an internal medicine residency at Winter General Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Topeka from 1949 to 1952 and served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps at Camp Carson, Colo., from 1952 to 1954.

Dr. Bill NiceDr. Nice was the medical director of Luther Place I and II and served on numerous medical committees on long term care. He was named doctor of the year in 1970 by The Topeka Capital-Journal and with Dr. Antonio Huaman was the WIBW Channel 13 Citizen of the Month. He also had provided medical service to Washburn University and to inmates at the Shawnee County jail from 1959 to 1970.
He was born May 20, 1922, in Parsons, to Charles Monroe Nice Sr. and Margaret May MaClenahan Nice. He graduated from high school in Parsons and earned an associates degree from Parsons Junior College. He earned a bachelor's degree at The University of Kansas in 1944 and earned a doctor of medicine degree from The University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1946.

Dr. Nice was a 52-year member of First Lutheran Church, and a life member of the Kansas State Historical Society, Shawnee County Historical Society and Valley Falls Historical Society. He was accomplished at the piano, organ and electric bass and played in various bands in Topeka. He also composed music.

Dr. Nice held elected offices in health and medical organizations in Topeka, Kansas, the U.S. and Great Britain. He was past director of the Student Health Service at Washburn University and chairman of the School of Health Committee for the Kansas Medical Society. He was a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the British Royal Society of Health. He was past president of the Lutheran Home Association and American Medical Directors Association.

He married Mary Jane Newman on Dec. 30, 1945, in Valley Falls. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Barbara Nice, Topeka, and Martha Joellen "Jody" Harnish Everett, Wash.; a son, Dr. David Charles Nice, Pullman, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church. Burial with military graveside honors conducted by Grahem-Herbers Post No. 3084 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Falls Cemetery. Dr. Nice will lie in state at Parker-Price Mortuary after 3 p.m. Monday, where visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. He also will lie in state at the church after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
