George Donald Bates, 94, of Topeka, passed away Friday, March 25, 2016.
He was born May 15, 1921, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Gilbert and Annie Rose (Coleman) Bates. He served in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Wythe in the Pacific Ocean Theater as a Boatswain's Mate, First Class, during WW II.
George was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 30 years, retiring in 1983. After retirement he assisted his son Michael's business, Bates Construction in Topeka.
Mr. Bates was baptized in the North Topeka Baptist Church and later became a member of the Central Avenue Christian Church which would later become the Northland Christian Church in Topeka. He was a member of Rubber Workers Union Local No. 307, American Legion Post No. 400, Topeka V.F.W., Sunrise Optimist Club of North Topeka and Meriden American Legion. He bowled on several bowling leagues and played on several fast pitch softball teams in Topeka.
George married Virginia S. Tschantz on May 3, 1941 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on August 23, 2009. Survivors include two daughters: Judy Harder of Longton, KS and Bobbie Broadbent of Topeka; a son and daughter-in-law: Michael and Diana Bates of Topeka; 8 grandchildren: Robyn L. Harder Coleman (Jim), David M. Harder, J.P. Wright (Valerie), Jason Wright (Kim), Ryan Broadbent (Victoria), Derrick Bates (Diane), Dustin Bates, and Dwayne Bates; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. George was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Lee "Bobby" Harder, Jr., in 2002; three brothers, Harry, Frank and Ervin Bates; and a sister, Lillie Bervert.
George enjoyed dancing, fishing, golfing, gardening, playing horse shoes and cards, watching old movies and attending family sporting events.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Interment with military honors will follow at the Rochester Cemetery, Topeka.
George will lie in state after 3 p.m., Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.
