Gary Dalton Lloyd, 79, died Wednesday, March 5th, at Topeka, KS, after suffering a heart attack the previous day.
Gary was born July 23,1945 at the KU V-12 Navy Hospital School in Kansas City, KS to Donald Eugene and Geraldine Mae (Speck) Lloyd, where Gary’s father was studying to be a navy doctor.
As a Navy brat, Gary lived at navy facilities in the states and South Pacific, including Norfolk, VA; Bethesda, MD; San Diego, CA; Guam; and the Philippines. The family had also visited Japan, Hawaii, and other far east places. Living outside the states gave Gary many opportunities to experience other cultures, and this showed in his personality and stories. Gary was grounded by his experiences at his Speck grandparents farm west of Nortonville as well as his Lloyd grandparents home in Emporia.
After his father’s death in December 1960, when Gary was 15, he spent a few months at the Speck farm, attending Atchison County schools, then moved to Topeka where his mother was employed by Kansas Department of Health. Gary graduated from Seaman High School in 1963.
Gary married Bernadine Miller in December 1965. She preceded him in death in February 2012.
Enjoying many hobbies, Gary was an avid gardener, supplying his friends, and even friends-of-friends, with seedlings he started. A self-taught musician, Gary was in a band formed with several friends he met at Washburn University. After taking a break to raise children, Gary played harmonica and bass guitar in several local blues bands, making many great friends along the way. Gary was an award-winning beer brewer and had roasted his own coffee beans for the last several years.
Survivors include his special companion, Jill Patterson, Topeka; son Brent Lloyd (Dayna), Valley Falls; daughter Brenna Lloyd Rooney, Topeka; grandson Matt Lloyd (Kandice), Norman, OK; grandson Dalton Rooney (Adrianna), Wakarusa; step-grandchildren Hunter, Colton, and Braylan Heineken; and great-grandsons Tristan Hallahan and Brantley Rooney.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Richard and Lawrence; wife; son-in-law Patrick Rooney; and favorite aunt and uncle, Virginia and Jim Marshall.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, March 11 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 12 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Round Mound Cemetery in Atchison County, 2718 Osborne Rd., east of Cummings, KS.
