Gary Lynn Domer, 72, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away October 19, 2022. He was born April 20, 1950 in Seneca, Kansas, the son of Robin Rice Domer II and Rose Evelyn (Ward) Domer. Topeka was Gary's home for all of his adult life.
He grew up in Nemaha County, graduated from Centralia High School in 1968 and went on to earn a degree in history from Washburn University in 1972. As a young man, Gary followed in the footsteps of his older brothers by attaining the high honor of Eagle Scout.
Gary held three jobs during his professional career. Shortly after graduation he went to work at the Kansas Insurance Department, where he was employed until 1995. He next worked for more than a decade as an auditor for the Colorado Insurance Department. Gary became manager of the Kansas Auto Insurance Plan in 2007, a position he held until his passing.
He served in numerous volunteer capacities, including those related to his career and others in the area of community service. He served as president of the Insurance Regulatory Examiners Society, of which he was a founding member. Gary also served as president of the North Topeka Saddle Club in 1975.
He had a strong passion for helping young people. Much of his energy in this capacity was channeled through the Sunrise Optimist Club of North Topeka. Gary joined the club in 1983 and served as president in 1985-86. Sunrise was named an honor club with a distinguished president during his term. Gary served as an Optimist lieutenant governor in 1987-88. He was the Optimist district secretary-treasurer in 1990-91. He served on the Sunrise Optimist Club Board of Directors for many years. Through his time with the club, Gary and other Sunrise Optimist members provided hundreds of opportunities for youth that otherwise would not have existed. He also served on the board of directors of the Boys & Girls Club of Topeka from 2008 through 2016. Many people in the North Topeka community knew Gary as one of the most unselfish people with his time and money they've ever met.
