Francis E. Erwin, a beloved figure in the Topeka community, passed away peacefully on September 27 2024, at the age of 89. Born on August 29, 1935, in Topeka, Kansas, Francis was a man of great character whose passion for life resonated deeply with all who knew him.
Francis spent twenty dedicated years with Knight Drywall Company before retiring from American Linen in 1997. His commitment to excellence extended beyond his professional life; he was also a well-respected official in the local sports scene, dedicating twenty years to officiating softball, football, and basketball. His contributions as a Softball Commissioner for two years showcased his unwavering commitment to fostering community through sports.
A proud alum of Hayden High School, Francis cherished his time there and carried the spirit of camaraderie throughout his life. Whether on the bowling lane, boxing ring, or at the fishing hole, he relished every opportunity to engage in sports and friendly competition. His love for fishing, camping, and hunting was matched only by his enthusiasm for card and board games, where his competitive spirit always shone brightly.
Francis and his wife were avid travelers, primarily cruises. Together they cruised to the Panama Canal, Eastern Caribbean, Jamaica, Holland, Germany, and Alaska.
Francis also proudly served in the Army Reserve for eight years, a testament to his dedication to community and country. His experiences shaped him into a man of integrity and strength, qualities that endeared him to many.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia (Bellman), whom he married on March 2, 1953, in Winchester, Kansas. Together, they created a warm and loving family atmosphere that nurtured their two daughters, Eugenia "Jeanie" (Larry) Ables and Deanna (Brian) Chrisp. Francis is also cherished by his granddaughter Staci (William) Greenwalt, and grandson Michael (Nikki) Ables, as well as six great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. He leaves behind beloved brothers Harold, Condie, and Jackie Erwin.
Though Francis's passing leaves a void, his legacy continues on through the lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Sherry Sue Erwin, sisters Betty Jane and Patty Ann, brother Larry Erwin, and his parents Archie and Julia (Knight) Erwin. They, along with all who knew him, will remember his hearty laughter and generous spirit.
