Frances Maebelle "Jackie" Vandiver, 88, Topeka, passed away on Thurs., Oct. 9, 2008, at Topeka Presbyterian Manor. Jackie was born on Aug. 28, 1920, to William Delano and Jessie Darling (Stiritz) Dunlap. She grew up on a farm north of Ottawa. She graduated from Ottawa High School in 1938. She graduated from Stewart Beauty Academy in Topeka and was a beauty operator for many years. Jackie was married to Eddie Vandiver on March 11, 1940. They were married 59 years when Eddie passed away in May of 1999. Jackie was a homemaker for many years and then went to work for the Boys' Industrial School where she started as a cook and then was a Cottage Mother for 16 years. Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Vandiver; her daughter, Sharon Kaye Gordon; and her infant son, Richard Dean Vandiver. Surviving are daughters: Karen (Pete) Smith and Dianne (Dennis) Kabriel all of Topeka; a sister: Beverly Crain of Jefferson City, MO; 5 grandchildren: Paul Smith, Chris (Beth) Smith, Troy Smith, Travis Olden, and Brandy (Sean) Pekarek; 9 great-grandchildren: Chelsea Hawkins, Jessica Smith, Paul William Smith, Brooke, Connor, Clay, and Christopher Smith, and Olivia and Jack Pekarek; nieces: Vicki (Jim) Mauer of Topeka, Annette (Raymond) Sweet of Kirksville, MO, Cindy (Daryl) Bernskoetter of Springfield, MO; nephews: Duane (Jill) Dawdy and Gary (Joann) Dawdy, all of Topeka; and great-nieces and nephews. Services will be at 1:00 PM, Mon., Oct. 13, 2008, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka. Interment at Rochester Cemetery, Topeka. Jackie will lie in state after 1:00 PM, Sun., at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.
