Floyd B. Hannon, Jr.
Floyd B. Hannon, Jr., passed away December 30, 2015. He was born March 21, 1921, in Wichita, KS, son of Floyd B. Hannon, Sr. and Thelma Lucille Riggs Hannon. He married Ileen L. Slout on November 28, 1940, in Wichita.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and was part of the invasion force of Japan. He joined the Wichita Police Department prior to joining the Marines. He had a long and colorful career, and retired as Chief of Police in 1976. He was the lead investigator on the first murder committed by BTK. He was so happy to have lived to see those murders solved.
Floyd and Ileen moved to Cherokee Village, Arkansas in 1976, and had a wonderful retirement. Never being one to sit still, Floyd was President and then secretary of the Kiwanis, served on two local boards, President of Square Dancing, served as Police Commissioner when the village became a city, and established their police department. He served for many years as a Commissioner for the Suburban Improvement District, and was active in the Men's Golf Association. He was an avid golfer and played his last rounds in the spring of 2014.
Floyd and Ileen moved to Topeka in August, 2014, to be near family.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Ileen of the home. His son, Floyd (Joan) of Florida, a daughter Mary Ann Howerton (Bill) of Topeka; brother Bill Hannon, of Wichita; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren;, two nieces and a nephew.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 PM, Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Lexington Park Independent Apartments' Atrium, 1011 SW Cottonwood Court, Topeka. Interment of cremains will be at a later date.
