Everett J. Young, 90, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006 in Wichita. Everett was born on December 18, 1915, in Topeka, the son of Dexter and Alma Young. He lived his life in the Oakland area, attended State Street Elementary, Holiday Jr. High, and graduated from Topeka High. Everett married Alberta Thowe on August 21, 1937 in Lawrence. She preceded him in death in 2001. During his life, Everett worked for over 40 years as a switchman/brakeman for Santa-Fe Railroad and in 1964 was awarded the Carnegie Hero Award for saving the life of a child. Everett was a member of the UTU Union, Masonic Lodge, enjoyed camping and belonged to a camping club. Survivors include his sister, Mary Talbott, Wichita, granddaughters: Kristina Abernathy, Kimberly Shufelberger, and Ashley Young, all of Topeka, and 3 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his nieces, Nancy Martin, Yellville, AR, Marcia Penner, Valley Center, who took an active part in his care, and a nephew, Larry Talbott of Wichita. Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alberta, his son, Dennis, and a brother, Floyd.
Graveside services will be held tomorrow, June 7, at 10:30 a.m., at Westlawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka. Mr. Young will lie in state after Noon today at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening.
