Etta L. (Essman) Landis, age 97, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2020 at Legend Senior Living in Topeka. Etta was born May 4, 1922 in Heavener, Oklahoma the daughter of Hal and Julia (Cline) Ryles. She later married Elmer R. Essman, Sr. in 1939, he preceded her in death. She married Harry Landis, he preceded her in death. Etta worked in the Grantville Schools as a cook. She later worked at the Northland Christian Church Day Care as a cook. Etta was a past member of the North Topeka Baptist Church. She was active with the Grantville PTA. She enjoyed gardening and cooking for others and later in her life she was a caregiver to neighbors and friends. Etta was preceded in death by a son, Elmer Essman, Jr. and a daughter, Julie Anita Pekarek. She is survived by her son, Howard “Jack” Essman of Topeka; nine grandchildren, Tony (Beth) Essman, Sara (Troy) Abel, Amy (Richard) Helt, Brenda (Matt) Jessop, Sean (Brandy) Pekarek, Brian Essman, William “Billy” (Kristi) Essman, Denice (Joe, Jr.) Trawicki and Chandler (Lyndsay) Pekarek; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Betty Remmenga, and a son-in-law, Larry Pekarek.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Grantville Cemetery. She will lie in state Tuesday from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission or the North Topeka Baptist Church and sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home.
