Ethel Dean Quaney, age 95, of Lawrence, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Brandon Woods Skilled Nursing of Covid-19 pneumonia. Ethel was born May 25, 1925 in Belvue, KS, the only daughter and youngest child of George J. and Lillian Craig Hupe. The family moved to Silver Lake and then to Perry where Ethel graduated from Perry Rural High School in 1943. She then worked in Topeka where she met Frank E. Quaney, Jr. They were married on September 26, 1953 in Topeka and celebrated 63 years of marriage. Ethel and Frank owned and operated IGA grocery stores in Perry and Topeka until they moved to Overland Park, Kansas and Parkville, Missouri for his work with Associated Grocers. Ethel served as the store bookkeeper and penny-pincher. Frank gave her all the credit for their having a comfortable lifestyle. While in Perry, Frank and Ethel were full members of the Perry United Methodist Church and active with the youth group. She also was a leader with the Perry Girl Scouts for many years.
Ethel was preceded in death by Frank and two brothers, Dale C. Hupe and Neil L. Hupe. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and numerous great and great-greats. The family wishes to thank all of the employees at Brandon Woods who always knew her name – which amazed her to no end! She came to love her time with her friends at Brandon Woods, for which her family is grateful.
Private family graveside services will be Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Perry. Memorials may be given to Perry United Methodist Church, PO Box 35, Perry, KS 66073 or sent in care of the funeral home. Please wear your mask to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
