OBITUARY: Ernest L. Kratina, Sr.
Ernest L. Kratina, Sr., 87, Topeka, died Tues., April 14, 2009, at Colmery-O'Neil VAMC. He was born Jan. 23, 1922, at Delia, the son of Frank E. Kratina and Bernice (Uhl). He graduated from Meriden High School and machinist's technical school at Chicago, IL.
Ernest served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired from Goodyear after 30 years of service. Mr. and Mrs. Kratina owned and operated 3 Hamburger Haven Cafes in Topeka. He also farmed and dealt in real estate. He was a 65 year member of the Masonic Lodge and a current member of Golden Rule Lodge # 90, AF & AM; Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies; Arab Shrine Temple; Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion; DAV; and ZCBJ Moravian Lodge # 128.
Ernest was married to Wilma J. Hotzel on May 3, 1944, in Topeka. She survives. He was preceded in death by a son, Bradley G. Kratina, on Dec. 1, 1993.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son: Dr. Ernest L. Kratina, Jr. of Delia; 4 daughters: Carol A. Harris of Topeka, Linda K. Ross of St. Louis, MO, Sharon E. Brehm of Topeka, and Cynthia S. Schreiner of Topeka; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM, Sat., April 18, 2009, at Prairie Home Cemetery, NW 35th & Menoken Road. Masonic services will be conducted by Golden Rule Lodge # 90, AF & AM.
Ernest will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Fri., at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, where the family will receive friends 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
