OBITUARY: Erna Suzanna Rubin
Erna S. Rubin, 91, of Topeka passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at Midland Hospice House. She was born Oct. 7, 1915, in Tampa, KS the daughter of Robert and Minnie (Stroth) Lenhart.
She had four brothers and one sister all of which preceded her in death. Growing up she worked in the family business raising chickens at the Lenhart Hatchery in Navarre, KS.
She married Olof Einar Rubin Jan. 28, 1937, in Topeka. He preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death is a great-grandson, Christopher Michael Pinkston.
She worked at the powder plant in Parsons, KS. Then when Einar joined the service in 1943, they returned to Topeka where she got a job at Seymour's breaking eggs. In 1945, when Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company opened their tire plant in Topeka she was the fourth woman hired; she worked as a cut, pick and splice for 32 years after which she retired.
Her hobbies included camping, hunting and fishing; she loved gardening and raising pugs. Erna was an avid bowler; bowling until she was 86. Traveling all over the U.S. each year to bowl in the Nationals Tournaments and bowling on various local leagues including the Lutheran League. She was also an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Erna is survived by her daughter, Marlene Zercher and husband Clinton, a granddaughter, Christine Pinkston and husband Earl, three great-grandsons, Jesse Zercher and wife Carrie, Michael Lister and Earl Pinkston III and three great-great grandchildren, Diamond, James and Cheyenne Phillips.
A Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Erna will lie in state after 3:00 PM Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.
