Emma Lou Vawter, 89, Topeka, died Saturday, October 29, 2016, at Brewster Place, Topeka. She was born June 5, 1927, at Faucett, MO, the daughter of Russell L. and Grace H. (Clements) Carpenter.
Emma graduated from Faucett High School. She moved to Kansas City with her sister, and on to Topeka when she was 22. She was a member of Light of the World. She had worked for 7-up, ALCO, and the Shawnee County Health Center.
She was married to William L. Vawter, Sr. on June 18, 1955, in Topeka. He preceded her in death on March 18, 2008.
Surviving are a son: Bill Vawter, Jr. of Wichita; two daughters: Shirley Vawter (Jan Vose) of Aurora, CO, and Sherrie Leiker (John) of Topeka; a step-son: Ron Vawter (Anita) of Topeka; six grandchildren: John Leiker, Jr., Curtis Leiker, Shawn Leiker, Kate Vawter, Samantha Vawter, and Lisa Duncan; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery and Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW Seventeenth, Topeka.
Emma will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Monday, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.
