Emma Joan Deckenbach of Topeka, Kansas passed away in her home November 18, 2022.
Emma was born June 22, 1932 to the late Bill and Bertha Langton.
Emma was raised during the Great Depression, imprinting a work ethic that remained with her throughout her life. She put herself through Nursing School, where she earned her degree. Emma was an empathetic, hard-working, knowledgeably skilled nurse in her field. She served a 32 year career at Menninger Clinic, where she retired in 1991.
Emma loved watching her favorite team the Jayhawks, a lifetime KU basketball fan. She was an avid reader, loved music, especially sentimental Jazz to the likes of Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. Her joy after retirement was found in her yard gardening. She found delight in traveling with her husband and siblings. Emma was also known for her love of celebrating Holidays, and hosted many gatherings. Emma and her late husband Peter, loved to get dressed up for date nights at the Elk Association, where they would enjoy live music, and dinner. They both loved music, and Pete would often play the piano, and they would sing together nostalgic songs from their past. She was also hands down the best scrabble player in town.
Throughout her life, Emma had been often described as no-nonsense, and pragmatic. Devoted to her children and family.
Emma is preceded by her parents, her loving husband Peter Ritte Deckenbach Jr., and son Daniel Cummings.
Emma is survived by her daughter, Nancy Cummings; granddaughter, Tracey Freeman; and three great grandchildren, Hannah Regitz, Emma Freeman, and Violet Freeman. She is also survived by her brother, Don (Elenor) Langton; sister, Silvia (Larry) Newman; and many nephews and nieces that she loved.
Family was the most important priority to Emma, and she spoke to her siblings daily. Emma's kindness, love, and caring thoughtfulness will be carried on by those who were close to her.
