Emma A. Smith, 88, Topeka, formerly of Alta Vista, died Saturday, July 24, 2004. She was born on Oct. 24, 1915, in Whitewater, Mo., the daughter of John William and Alma Dorothea Reineke Schuette. Mrs. Smith lived in Alta Vista before moving to Topeka in 2001. She was a member of the Emanuel Methodist Church in Alta Vista. She married Ray J. Smith on April 3, 1943, in Alta Vista. He preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Verlyn "Butch" and his wife, Karen Smith, Topeka, and Clark Smith, Topeka; two brothers, Alvin O. Schuette, Springfield, Ill., and Clarence A. Schuette, Topeka; one sister, Dora A. Halderman, Topeka; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in North Topeka. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in Emanuel Cemetery in Alta Vista. Emma Smith will lie in state after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 t o 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice house, 200 S.W.
