Elvin A. Reed, age 94, of Topeka passed away Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Lexington Park Care Home in Topeka. Elvin was born April 5, 1924 in Emporia the son of Everett and Jane Collinge Reed. He graduated from Marion High School and served in the U.S. Army. He married Jeannine H. Boudeman March 7, 1959. She preceded him in death June 27, 2014 . Elvin farmed and operated a grain elevator in Wakarusa before working as a clerk for the Postal Service from 1961 – 1986. Elvin was a longtime active member of the Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church where he served on the financial committee and on the church board of directors. He was also a proud member of the Sunrise Optimist Club. Elvin loved antique automobiles and was a member of several groups and clubs. He was also a member of the A.F.& A.M. Masonic Lodge Golden Rule #90 in Topeka; past president of A.A.R.P. Chapter #37 and N.A. Retired Federal Employees #2. He served as vice president of the Northwest Neighborhood Improvement Association and also was a member of the V.F.W. Post #1650. Elvin also loved gardening and would raise fresh vegetables and sell at the Topeka farmers market every Saturday for over 20 years.
Elvin was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sons, Thomas and David (Kim) Reed of Topeka; two daughters, Pearl and Mary Reed of Topeka; a sister, Leila Schuenight of Topeka; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. He will lie in state Tuesday from 1:00- 5:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Rochester Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church or Sunrise Optimist and left in care of the funeral home. davidsonfuneral.com.
