Edward Coffman Sr.
Edward N. Coffman Sr., 83, Topeka, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in Topeka.
Mr. Coffman worked for John Morrell Meat Packing Co. for 16 years, where he began as a mail boy and retired as a foreman. He owned and operated Coffman-Metzger Grocery Store on North Kansas Avenue for 22 years and later worked for the city of Topeka Street Department until retiring in 1984.
He was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Topeka, the son of Abraham Harry and Lilly Osborn Coffman. He attended Topeka schools and played left field for the Topeka Decker Oilers for several years, and was on the 1948 state championship team.
He married Martha Elizabeth Quast in July 1938 in Topeka. She died on Sept. 8, 1982.
Survivors include a son, Ed Coffman Jr., Topeka; a sister, Hazel Longstaff, Topeka; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Coffman will lie in state after noon Sunday at Parker-Price Mortuary, where visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m.
