OBITUARY: Edward Emil Smatla
Edward Emil Smatla, 85, Silver Lake, died Mon., Feb. 16, 2009, at Midland Hospice House. He was born Aug. 18, 1923, at Maple Hill, the son of Thomas G. and Marie A. (Juran) Smatla. He graduated from Rossville High School. Ed was a cattle and grain farmer. He was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church. He was married to Elizabeth Howard Smith in 1970. She preceded him in death on June 20, 2005. Surviving are 2 sisters: Lydia (Dailey) Carl of Prairie Village and Marie DeVeney of Raytown, MO; a brother: Henry Smatla of Meriden; a step-daughter: Debra Like of Rossville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Sat., Feb. 21, 2009, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence. Interment in the Czech-Moravan Cemetery. Ed will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Fri., at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
